Introduction to Polysaccharide-Based Hydrogel
Polysaccharides are carbohydrates composed of repeating monosaccharide units linked by glycosidic bonds which can be isolated from low-cost natural resources such as algae (e.g. alginate), plants (e.g. starch, cellulose, and pectin), animals (e.g. chitosan and hyaluronic acid) and microorganisms (e.g. xanthan gum and dextran). These polysaccharide polymers have a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological properties such as high biocompatibility and bioactivity and low enzymatic degradability. In addition, the presence of carboxyl, amino, hydroxyl, and other hydrophilic groups facilitates the conjugation of polysaccharides to drugs and makes them suitable for a range of chemical modifications for the desired application. All these advantages make polysaccharides a star material for the preparation of hydrogels. Because of its biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and biodegradability, polysaccharide-based hydrogel is very suitable as a medical material. Nowadays, the polysaccharide-based hydrogel is widely used in a wide range of fields such as biomedicine, 3D bioprinting, food engineering, personal hygiene, agriculture, and environmental remediation.
