Introduction to Chitosan-Based Hydrogel

Chitosan (CS) is the only natural cationic polymer with valuable properties such as biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and biodegradability. However, raw chitosan is only soluble in dilute acid solution and has many disadvantages such as low mechanical strength, low heat resistance, and low adsorption selectivity, all of these factors seriously hinder the wide application of chitosan. Based on the consideration of the ideal structure for a specific application, raw chitosan can be made into chitosan-based hydrogels by different methods to enhance its functional properties. Depending on the specific requirements for chitosan-based hydrogel size, structure, shape, thermal stability, the release time of active ingredients, and residual toxicity of the final product we can choose different hydrogel synthesis methods such as emulsion cross-linking, template sacrifice, ion imprinting, extrusion, etc. Because of its excellent biosafety and low cost of preparation, the chitosan-based hydrogel is now widely used in biomedical, agricultural, and food engineering fields.
