Introduction to Guar Gum-Based Hydrogel

Guar gum is one of the naturally occurring high molecular weight water-soluble polysaccharides, which is acquired by the ground endosperm of Cyamopsis tetragonolobus or Cyamopsis psoraloides. The presence of a large number of hydroxyl groups increases the hydrogen bonding capacity of guar gum when dissolved in water, thereby increasing the viscosity and gelling properties of guar gum solutions. Meanwhile, guar gum is of great interest due to its low cost, and abundant and renewable resources. Based on the excellent properties of guar gum such as high adsorption capacity, gel formation ability, high stability, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, biosafety, and biodegradation, guar gum-based hydrogel is widely used in biomedical, agricultural, and other fields. Considerable efforts have been made to synthesize guar gum-based hydrogels, based on the different synthesis methods, guar gum-based hydrogels can be classified into copolymers and semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (s-IPN) hydrogels. In hydrogels, the straight polymer chains of guar gum are randomly connected to each other by cross-linking agents. Two active sites are present on these cross-linking agents, which are intermolecularly bonded to the hydroxyl groups of the polymer chains, forming a highly compact coil-like assembly. When water is added to such a compact structure it gets entrapped into it with a net increase in water absorption/holding tendency of the guar gum-based hydrogels and therefore, are widely utilized in pharmaceutical and biomedical applications.
