Introduction to Hyaluronic Acid-Based Hydrogel

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural, linear endogenous polysaccharide that plays an important physiological and biological role in the organism. Nowadays hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel is widely used in drug delivery, tissue engineering, cell therapy, regenerative medicine, and diagnostics. Therefore, the analysis and characterization of the hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel are essential to understand its biological function and develop potential medical applications. Due to the inability of hyaluronic acid to spontaneously form gels, several physical and chemical HA hydrogel design strategies have been developed to obtain hyaluronic acid-based hydrogels, such as click chemistry reactions, enzymatic cross-linking and disulfide cross-linking or supramolecular assembly methods. However, each of these strategies has its own advantages and disadvantages. For example, various chemical cross-linking techniques often require organic solvents or metal catalysts, which cause the formation of reaction by-products. Physically cross-linked hydrogels typically have lower mechanical and thermal stability. Therefore, it is usually necessary to select an appropriate synthesis method to adjust various physical and chemical parameters of the hydraulic acid-based hydrogel according to the required performance of specific applications during design.
