Hydroxyapatite (HAp) is a calcium phosphate similar to the human hard tissues in morphology and composition. Hap is the main inorganic component of human and animal bones. It can achieve chemical bond bonding with body tissues at the interface. HAp has a certain solubility in the body, it can release harmless ions to the body, participate in metabolism, stimulate or induce bone hyperplasia, and can promote the recovery of defective tissues.
HAp is also the main component of the teeth. 65% of human bones, 70% of dentin, and 95% of enamel are HAp. The content of HAp reaches 20% of the human body. HAp is also a rich source of easily digestible calcium phosphate and is used as a dietary supplement and food additive.
With the development of nanotechnology, a major impact on materials science has been noticed. The production of nanomaterials has gained considerable attention for adsorption, catalysis, and optical applications, particularly when biomaterials are involved.
Nano-HAp (nano-HAp) is attracting interest as a biomaterial for use in prosthetic applications due to its similarity in size, crystallography, and chemical composition with human hard tissue. Bone and teeth enamel is largely composed of a form of this mineral.
Features of Nano-HAp
Artificial synthesis of nano-HAP originated from NASA. In a weightless environment, the minerals of astronauts’ teeth and bones will be lost. NASA uses synthetic nano-HAP as a means of recovery. Later this patent was used to produce nano-HAp toothpaste.
Scope of application
1. Remove stained plaque, tartar, and calculus to achieve non-destructive whitening
Tooth staining is mostly caused by pigmented bacteria, food, or other chemicals. For example, tea, coffee, beverages, and tobacco can cause tea spots and smoke spots; yellow pigments are related to the presence of dental plaque. There are usually three ways to stain the tooth surface: 1) the pigment directly adheres to the tooth surface; 2) the pigment is contained in tartar or calculus; 3) the pigment is incorporated in the tooth structure, such as tetracycline teeth and dental fluorosis that affect enamel discoloration by dentin. HAp toothpaste can effectively remove stained plaques caused by the first two tooth surface staining methods.
Tartar, also known as dental plaque, is a biofilm that gradually deposits on the surface of teeth. It is composed of food residues, shed oral epithelial cells, saliva, and bacteria, which can harden into dental calculus over time. The bacteria in tartar are mainly streptococcus and anaerobic bacteria that usually exist in the oral cavity. After the tartar accumulates to a certain thickness, the bacteria inside the tooth surface immediately turn into anaerobic respiration because of the isolation from the air. The acid produced by anaerobic respiration will corrode tooth enamel and further promote the formation of dental caries. The tartar accumulated at the root of the tooth can also irritate the gums and cause periodontal diseases such as periodontitis.
Nano-HAp toothpaste contains nano- and micro-sized HAp particles. Nano-HAp has a small particle size and large surface area, and has a strong binding ability with protein (bacteria contain protein) and pigment; micro-HAp has excellent friction characteristics. During the brushing process, nano-HAp can effectively adsorb bacteria, dental plaque, and pigments. The friction properties of micron-sized HAp can work with the toothbrush to more effectively remove tartar on the surface of teeth and reduce stains, teeth plaque, and dental calculus.
HAp toothpaste can not only remove dental plaque through nano-HAp, but also repair damaged enamel, restore the mineral density and surface smoothness of enamel, and improve the adhesion of enamel to dental plaque and dental caries. It also improves the gloss and whiteness of teeth and achieves a whitening effect without damage to teeth.
2. Remove bad breath
Bacteria in the oral cavity are primarily responsible for bad breath (bad mouth odor). There are a large number of bacteria in the human oral cavity. Among them, anaerobic bacteria, such as Porphyria gingivalis and spirochetes, are the main ones that can produce odor. These anaerobic bacteria rely on proteins in food residues and exfoliated tissues in the mouth to survive and multiply, and at the same time release odors, mainly hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan. Eating odorous food, drinking alcohol and smoking can all cause bad breath. Local oral pathological factors can also cause bad breath, such as caries, gingivitis, periodontitis, etc. Chronic periodontal disease in adults is also the main cause of bad breath. Other systemic pathological factors are also the root causes of bad breath, such as diabetes, respiratory and digestive tract diseases.
HAp toothpaste is mainly through the excellent adsorption performance of HAp, which can be quickly combined with oral bacteria and bad breath chemicals during the process of brushing, and then discharged together through the mouth to clean the oral cavity.
HAp toothpaste eliminates the bacteria that cause bad breath, inhibits harmful bacteria in the oral cavity, prevents and relieves periodontal diseases, and achieves the purpose of removing bad breath. At the same time, the spices added to the toothpaste can also effectively improve the breath.
3. Prevent and treat oral diseases such as periodontitis, bleeding gums, oral ulcers, loose teeth, etc.
Periodontal disease and oral ulcers are caused by bacterial infections. Controlling plaque and calculus on the edge of the gums is an effective way to prevent periodontal disease. Controlling harmful bacteria in the mouth and maintaining oral hygiene are important measures to prevent oral ulcers.
HAp itself has a certain anti-inflammatory and hemostatic effect, coupled with its effective function of removing plaque, calculus, and inhibiting harmful bacteria in the oral cavity, giving HAp toothpaste excellent prevention and treatment of periodontitis, gum bleeding, obvious effect on oral ulcers, loose teeth, and other oral diseases. Unlike other kinds of toothpaste added with antibiotics, HAp is the main mineral component of human bones and teeth. It does not produce drug resistance and has no toxic side effects.
4. Prevent allergies
Dentine hypersensitivity refers to the symptoms of soreness, softness, and pain caused by external stimuli, such as hot, sour, and sweet, and mechanical action (biting hard objects). Dentine hypersensitivity is a frequently occurring and common disease in the oral cavity. The adult incidence rate is relatively high. It is the main cause of dental pain in clinics.
Nano-HAp has the same mineral composition as tooth enamel and dentin. It has good histocompatibility and a high affinity with tooth enamel and dentin. It can realize the remineralization and restoration of tooth enamel and exposed dentin. Prevent the loss of calcium ions, solve the problem of tooth enamel and dentin demineralization, and form a HAp coating on the exposed dentin surface to seal the dentin tubules and fundamentally relieve dentin hypersensitivity.
5. Prevention and treatment of dental caries
HAp toothpaste (without fluoride) has the same anti-caries function as fluoride toothpaste. Nano-HAp has been proven to be an effective anti-caries ingredient in field trials, which can reduce the rate of new caries in elementary school children similar to the effect of fluoride, reaching 36%-56%. A field test conducted on healthy adults in the United States found that nano-HAp toothpaste can not only inhibit the development of dental caries but also has no significant difference in the remineralization ability of fluoride on early caries.
Unlike fluoride toothpaste that prevents caries by forming fluorapatite on the tooth surface, HAp toothpaste uses nano-HAp to remove plaque, repair damaged tooth enamel, and restore the mineral density and surface of tooth enamel. Smoothness improves the resistance of tooth enamel to plaque adhesion and tooth decay, and at the same time improves the gloss and whiteness of teeth.
Scientific research shows that fluoride has the effect of preventing caries, but excessive fluoride can cause problems such as dental fluorosis or skeletal fluorosis. The use of fluoride in oral care products is strictly controlled; nano-HAp is not only inhibiting the development of dental caries but is safe and edible. HAp is a rich source of easily digestible calcium phosphate and is used in dietary supplements, which can be swallowed by children without any worries. From children, pregnant women to those with sensitive gums, HAp toothpaste (without fluoride) can be used with peace of mind.
6. Prevention and treatment of complications and sequelae caused by professional treatments such as orthodontics and dental cleaning
During professional treatments such as orthodontics and cleansing (such as washing and whitening), inevitable mechanical friction (such as scraping, removing orthodontic brackets, etc.) will cause rough enamel, demineralization, or surface cracks, etc. The movement of teeth under the external force of orthodontic brackets can cause periodontal gum damage. Nano-HAp toothpaste can fill the enamel cracks, smooth the rough parts, promote the healing of damaged periodontal gums, restore periodontal gum health, and effectively prevent the complications and sequelae of professional treatments such as orthodontic cleaning, and greatly improve user experience.
