Introduction of Thermally Responsive Hydrogels
Thermally responsive hydrogel, also known as thermo-sensitive or thermo-responsive hydrogels, are materials that undergo reversible changes in volume or shape in response to temperature changes. The thermally responsive behavior of these hydrogels is due to the presence of temperature-sensitive groups in the polymer chains, such as N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), which is a commonly used thermoresponsive monomer. NIPAAm has a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of around 32°C. Below this temperature, the hydrogel is swollen and can absorb water, but above this temperature, it collapses and expels water. Other thermo-responsive hydrogels include polyethylene glycol and poly(organophosphazenes) based hydrogels, which have different LCSTs depending on their molecular weight and crosslinking density. The LCST of a thermally responsive hydrogel can be tuned by changing the composition of the polymer chains or by adding other temperature-sensitive monomers. This tunability allows for the design of hydrogels with specific temperature-responsive properties for various applications.
