Introduction to Poly(vinyl Alcohol)-Based Hydrogel

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), a water-soluble and biocompatible synthetic polymer, contains a large number of hydroxyl functional groups that can be cross-linked to form hydrogels. Due to its chemical stability, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, biological aging resistance, water absorption capacity, and easy processing, PVA -based hydrogel plays a unique role in many fields such as agriculture, industry, and medicine. PVA -based hydrogels can usually be prepared by physical cross-linking, chemical cross-linking, or radiation cross-linking methods. Despite its many advantages, the development of poly(vinyl alcohol)-based hydrogels still faces some challenges, such as low mechanical strength, crosslinking efficiency susceptible to contaminants, and high production costs. Nevertheless, ongoing research and development efforts are aimed at addressing these limitations and improving the performance of PVA-based hydrogels.

Applications of Poly(vinyl Alcohol)-Based Hydrogel in Biomedicine

Poly(vinyl Alcohol)-based hydrogels have found numerous applications due to their unique properties, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and versatility in response to different stimuli.

  • Tissue Engineering: PVA-based hydrogels are widely used as scaffolds for cell culture and tissue regeneration in the field of tissue engineering.
