Introduction of Natural Polyester-Based Hydrogels

Natural polyesters are a class of biopolymers that are derived from renewable sources such as plants, animals, and microorganisms. Due to their excellent properties, they have gained increasing attention as potential materials for hydrogel applications. Numerous natural polyester-based hydrogels have been developed, such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs)-based hydrogels and polylactic acid (PLA)-based hydrogels. PHA is a family of biodegradable polyesters synthesized by various microorganisms as intracellular storage compounds. And PLA is a biodegradable polyester derived from renewable resources such as cornstarch and sugarcane. Typically, PHA-based hydrogels or PLA-based hydrogels have been developed by crosslinking PHA or PLA with various crosslinkers such as glutaraldehyde and divinyl sulfone. Natural polyester-based hydrogels have several advantages over synthetic hydrogels. They are biodegradable, biocompatible, and can be easily synthesized from renewable resources. They also have excellent mechanical properties and can be easily tailored to specific applications. These properties make natural polyester-based hydrogels an attractive material for various applications.
