Hydrogel Development Services by Sources

Hydrogel Development Services by Sources

Hydrogels are a class of materials that have a three-dimensional network structure and are capable of absorbing and retaining large amounts of water within their structure without dissolving in the water. Hydrogels can be classified based on their source, which includes natural, synthetic, and hybrid hydrogels. As a preferred partner in hydrogel development, Matexcel is committed to developing customized hydrogel solutions for our global customers, and our dedicated scientists can select the appropriate raw materials and preparation methods to create hydrogel materials with excellent properties for their specific application needs.

Classification of Hydrogels Based on Their Sources

Hydrogels can be classified as natural hydrogel, synthetic hydrogel, and hybrid hydrogel based on their source, and each type of hydrogel has its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Natural hydrogels are prepared from natural polymers of non-artificial origins. They are inherently biocompatible and biologically active and are good candidates for many biomedical applications requiring non-toxicity and non-inflammatory responses. However, natural hydrogels also have disadvantages such as low mechanical strength and low stability. Synthetic hydrogels are constructed by chemical polymerization techniques and they are preferred when higher durability, strength, and water absorption capacity are required. However, their corresponding drawbacks include poor biocompatibility, biodegradability, and the presence of potential toxicity. Exclusive application of natural or synthetic hydrogels can limit their applicability when control of physical properties and proper biological integration are required. Thus, the emergence of hybrid hydrogel addresses the need to maintain the tunability of chemical and mechanical properties without sacrificing excellent biocompatibility. Overall, the choice of hydrogel source depends on the intended application and the desired properties of the hydrogel.
