Advantages of DNA Hydrogel

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) not only serves as the material basis for biological inheritance, but also shows great potential for the construction of biomaterials due to its programmability, biocompatibility, functional versatility, and biodegradability. Different DNA sequences have different effects on the denseness of the formed DNA hydrogels, and we can design and synthesize nucleic acids with certain sequences by molecular biology techniques to achieve precise preparation of DNA nanostructures in a programmable and predictable manner. In addition, DNA can be modified with many functional groups, such as acrylates, amino groups, carboxyl groups, and thiols, etc. These unique properties allow DNA to bind to some polymers or nanomaterials through covalent, electrostatic, and hydrogen bonds, which further expands the application of DNA hydrogels. Therefore, during the preparation of DNA hydrogels, the types of hydrogel components and cross-linking methods can be flexibly adjusted according to the specific needs of downstream applications to present DNA hydrogels with different shapes, sizes and functional properties.
