Introduction to Collagen-Based Hydrogel
Collagen is the most abundant protein in animals with a triple helix structure, biodegradability, biocompatibility, biomimetic and hemostatic properties. Collagen-based biomaterials, such as collagen-based hydrogel, are widely used in pharmaceutical, biomedical, cosmetic, and food research because of their easy availability, low cost, and programmable properties. Although collagen has excellent thermal, mechanical, elastic, and enzymatic stability in vivo, these properties are greatly reduced when it is extracted and used, so improvements to collagen are needed to make it better for use. In order to improve or obtain the required properties for a specific application, different improvement methods such as covalent binding, graft polymerization, cross-linking (physical, chemical, and enzymatic), and blending methods can be used to meet the performance requirements of collagen-based hydrogel for a particular application. In recent years, collagen-based hydrogel has made great progress in several fields and has laid an important foundation for future development. In addition, more improvement technologies need to be explored to develop the potential of collagen-based hydrogel for more applications.
